Andrew Schulz is a New York based stand-up comedian, actor, producer and podcaster with a massive following in the comedy world. Andrew was the most viewed stand-up comic on YouTube in both 2018 and 2019 with view counts averaging 4 million per week. His popularity continues to soar after the recent release of his four-part Netflix special “Andrew Schulz Saves America.”
In addition to all of his accolades as a comedian, Andrew Schulz also has talent on a surfboard. Andrew grew up in Manhattan but would spend summers at his family’s beach house surfing on Fire Island, NY. He grew up inspired by surfers like Chris Ward and the Lopez brothers and credits the Lost surf film “5’5″ x 19 1/4” as one of his favorites. As his comedy career took off his opportunities to surf became less frequent but recently he has been trying to get back in the water as much as possible. When the opportunity to surf on AWM’s PerfectSwell® technology came up, he jumped on it.
Andrew informed AWM he would be in Austin, Texas for a spot as a guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Joe Rogan’s studio happens to be two hours from BSR Surf Resort, home to a world-class PerfectSwell® pool. Andrew met up with pro surfers Evan and Eric Geiselman, Rob Kelly, and Kevin Schulz to share some waves and provide a little insight for his first real wave pool experience.
The weather in Texas the day of the session was unusually cold with temperatures in the thirties but that didn’t stop Andrew and the pros from throwing on full wetsuit gear and having an epic session. Andrew came to the pool with the goal of getting a proper barrel. After surfing the lowers wave for the first hour of the session and getting a few fun barrels, he wanted to step it up a notch and test his surfing on the wedge barrel. After just a few attempts and some on-the-spot coaching from the pros, Andrew got what he came to PerfectSwell® to get: a proper in-and-out barrel on the left wedge.
“That was so cool. It took me five times man, that’s the brilliance of these wave pools. You can elevate your skills so quickly,” Andrew said about his experience. Seeing Andrew’s stoke was something that surfers of all levels can relate to. It didn’t matter that it was thirty degrees or that he just came from Joe Rogan’s podcast and his Netflix special was about to be released to the world that night. The joy that comes from scoring a good wave is second to none.
“To this day, surfing is the most fun I’ll have doing anything. There’s nothing more fun,” Andrew says. That is why surfers spend so much time and energy chasing that feeling whether at their local break, on a surf trip, or in a wave pool. Since that session, Andrew continues to take any opportunity to surf including some sessions at the indoor pool at the American Dream Mall, which uses PerfectSwell® Surf Pool Technology and is just fifteen minutes from his apartment in New York City.
